Louis Claude de Freycinet was a French naval officer who commanded a round-the-world scientific expedition between 1817 and 1820 aboard the warship Uraine.  During a three-month visit at Guam in 1819, Freycinet and his senior officers collected a wide range of historic and ethnographic data about the Marianas, supplemented by drawings produced by the expedition’s artist.   Included in Freycinet collection are original sketches, watercolors, and partial engravings depicting local fauna, contemporary 19th century scenes on Guam, and reconstructions of pre-European Chamorro life and culture based on ethnographic information provided to Freycinet by the Chamorro Vice Governor of Guam, Luis de Torres.
